There's A New Film Professor at Malone University.

This still was captured just last week on the set of new Film & Media Professor -- Sarah Hanssen's short film shoot -- HOW TO AVOID SEXUAL TEMPTATION.

If you're around Malone these days, you'll recognize junior Cale Short in the hazy background.  Cale has helped on several films this year and is putting finishing touches on one last submission. 

Sarah Hanssen joined our faculty this fall, and has been bringing much energy, excitement and talent to Malone.  She teaches our production sequence of courses, but also is committed to giving students a wide variety of opportunities to learn about the craft and profession of filmmaking. 

(For those of you who know him, yes, that's Josh Swain helping out with Cinematography on the set.)

Sarah comes to Malone from Pratt Institute in New York, and you can read a little bit more about her here.  Sarah's work with students, equipment and colleagues will all contribute to the positive developments in this year's Open Frame Film Fest.

STATE OF THE UNION story in Canton Repository

Michael Garwood shot his film STATE OF THE UNION this past Saturday and got a full page of coverage in the Canton Repository Sunday morning. 

Shane Hoover writes: 

"ZOAR - Pipe smoke mingled with the sulfurous bite of burnt gunpowder.
Union soldiers, arranged in a dark blue line, readied for the rebel charge. Bearded veterans and smooth-faced lads, they raised their rifles.
Crack, ca-ca-crack, crack!
The woods disappeared behind a veil of smoke. The volley echoed across the quiet village of Zoar.
“Cut! That was good,” yelled director Michael Garwood from behind his video camera. On to the next shot."

Counting Down the Days

The Open Frame Film Fest is coming soon -- April 14th, 8 pm at Canton's Palace Theatre.  And while we hope our audience is counting down the days til the big event...we know that our filmmakers are counting the days.

Some have finished shooting, many are still in the phase of pre-production, almost all are starting to think about all of the editing, sound-balancing, music-mixing and effects generation that they need to do in the editing lab.

Come see how their drama ends -- at the Palace on April 14th...

Rules for Submission, Festival 2012

Any student films are welcome for submission to the Open Frame. Student films must include at least two Malone College students in two of the following positions: Producer, Director, Writer, Lead Actor, Editor, Original Score.

• We encourage all genres of: documentaries, journalistic expose, fictional narrative, stop action, animation, experimental, music videos, etc…

• student produced films may be submitted by April 5th at 9 a.m..

• films must be submitted digitally on a hard drive or through upload through a file transfer service.  Quicktime format (.mov) is preferred.

• films must be sixteen minutes or under to be considered (including the credits).

• films may only include lead actors who do not appear (in significant roles) in any other film festival submissions.

• filmmakers must obtain rights to any music used in their films.

• accepted filmmakers must volunteer a minumum of six hours during the final week of the festival.

• Films will be accepted based upon quality of form and content, and restricted based on the limited time-frame of the festival.  

All films are programmed into the festival by faculty members of the Communication Arts Department who also occasionally consult local filmmakers and faculty members in other departments.

Glenoak Film Fest Opportunity

The 2012 GlenOak 5 Minute Film Festival is right around the corner.  We'd like to invite you and your students to enter the contest.  All the details are posted at the festival website.

There are several important changes this year that we hope will make the festival even better.

1)No Entry Fees - We're going to scale back a bit on prizes and trophies and we've decided to waive the fee. Students may submit as many entries as they'd like at no cost.
2)Specific Categories - students will select and compete in 3 categories.
3)2 weeks to complete movies - this year the contest will last for 2 weeks.  This should help more students complete their films and should ease conflicts for college students and avoid spring break and other issues that might arise.
4)Teachers - By request of several of our teachers - this year we'll feature films produced by teachers and staff members  - should be fun and I hope several of you will give it a shot.
5)Projects submitted to dvd.  This should help us avoid file compatibility issues which prevented us from playing one of the college submissions last year.

Contest will begin on January 30th when the prompts will be released on the web site and all films must be submitted before 6pm on February 10th.
